A tight side courtyard turned into the main outdoor room of the house, with a squared fire pit, a low retaining wall and room for a full seating group.

The narrowest part of the property, made the most used part of it.

The space between the two wings of this house was doing nothing. It is sheltered on three sides, which makes it the warmest and most private ground on the property once there is a reason to be there.

The framework

A low retaining wall with a broad cut stone cap holds the grade and doubles as the edge of the room. Inside it, a large format paver patio carries a full seating group with space left to walk around it. The fire pit is squared to match the geometry of the house and capped in the same stone as the wall.

Planting and finish

Containers and bed planting soften the corners, and the whole courtyard reads as an extension of the rooms it opens off.
