The back of this property runs straight into mature woods, which is the best feature it has. The patio is placed to face it, and everything built is kept low so nothing competes with the canopy behind.
The framework
A curved natural stone seat wall runs the width of the space with a cut stone cap wide enough to sit on comfortably. It backs onto the planting rather than the lawn, so the seating faces the trees. The circular fire pit is built from the same stone and capped to match, set on a tumbled paver patio with a contrasting soldier border.
Planting and finish
Beds are kept simple and shade tolerant so they read as an extension of the woodland edge rather than a separate garden. Torch lighting is set either end of the wall.
